New Students Outside the U.S.
If you are admitted to TU and will come to the U.S. as an F-1 international student for the first time, please follow the steps below after applying and gaining admission.
I-20 Process

Submit Enrollment Contract
Your respective admissions office will notify the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) when you have paid the enrollment deposit.

Create I-20
We will email you an invitation to login to the ISSO Portal and complete the Create I-20 request.

Submit Passport
You must submit a copy of your valid passport and financial evidence of your ability to pay for at least one year of studies, plus living expenses.

We Will Contact You
After submitting your Create I-20 request, please allow 3-5 business days for us to review your documents and process your I-20. We will contact you at your TU email address during that time if we have any questions about your documents.

Arrival Information and Timeline
The closest airport to 缅北禁地 University is Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI). All new-to-TU international students are required to arrive before the Program Start Date listed on their I-20.
The earliest you can enter the U.S. is 30 days before your program start date. This date is printed on your I-20. Permission for late arrival is granted in very limited circumstances to graduate students only, and requires the approval and support of the admitting department. Requests for late arrival are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
SEVIS Transfer Students (currently attending another U.S. institution)
If you are an international student transferring to TU, please follow the instructions below to complete your SEVIS transfer prior to attending the mandatory in-person New International Student Orientation.

Apply and be Admitted
Apply and be admitted to TU鈥檚 ELC or a degree-seeking program. Submit your enrollment contract.

Submit Transfer-In and Create I-20 Request
After being invited to the , submit a Transfer-in request and a Create I-20 request, and upload all required documents.

Request an SEVIS Transfer
Submit your TU acceptance letter to your current school to request an SEVIS Transfer.
Note: Schools may have different policies on SEVIS transfer. Make sure you consult the international student office at your current school for procedures and the timeline.

ISSO issues Transfer I-20
The ISSO will issue a Transfer I-20 to you after we receive your request in the ISSO portal and your released SEVIS record.
Your SEVIS transfer is not complete until you receive your TU I-20 and we have activated your record.
Change of Status to F-1 Students
If you are currently in the U.S. under a visa classification other than F-1 and wish to become an F-1 student, please with our ISSO advisors to learn more about the process.
ISSO Pre-Arrival Webinar
Each term, students who received I-20s will receive an invitation, sent to their TU email address, to attend our ISSO Pre-Arrival Webinar. Interested family members are also welcome to join this online seminar. Students will meet ISSO staff and current TU international students, and be provided with pertinent information regarding visas, academics, life at TU, and tips for arrival.
After Arrival on Campus
After arriving to TU, you will need to complete the following mandatory steps before we can activate your SEVIS record:
- Mandatory Online Immigration Orientation: The Mandatory Online Immigration Orientation is available to complete up to 30 days before your program start date in the .
- Immigration Check-in: Complete the online check-in through the by uploading all required documents after arrival.
- Update your Permanent Address: Update your Permanent Address in the . This is your U.S. address where you would like to receive future important correspondence from TU, such as bills and diplomas.
- Update Other Addresses: Update these addresses in the :
- Physical Address: The local address where you physically live (This may be the same as your Permanent Address)
- Foreign Address: Your residential address in your home country (verify that the address we have is correct)
Register to Attend ISSO鈥檚 New International Student Orientation
All new-to-TU students are required to attend this in-person orientation. Note that the dates and requirements for F-1 and J-1 orientations may differ. Fall 2025 New International Student Orientation is August 20, 2025. Registration is required. All new students who have received an I-20 will receive an invitation to register by email (TU email address).

FAQs
Will housing be provided to me?
You are responsible for securing your own housing. Most TU international students live off-campus. On-campus housing is available to undergraduate students only, and must be reserved well in advance of each semester. Please visit Living On-Campus for information about deadlines and how to apply. Visit Off-Campus Living for information about available off-campus housing in the area.
Does TU offer financial aid to international students?
International students are not eligible to apply for U.S. federal financial aid programs, but there are scholarships you can apply for. Please review these International Student Scholarships for opportunities, application instructions, and deadlines.
How do I find on-campus employment or a graduate assistantship?
To look for an on-campus job (including graduate assistantships), you may visit the Handshake website, managed by TU鈥檚 Career Center, after you have enrolled in classes.
I have my own health insurance. Must I purchase the insurance offered through TU?
If you already have health insurance that meets 缅北禁地 University鈥檚 standards, you may request a waiver. Please review the information on this web page for requirements and deadlines to make your request: Health Insurance for International Students. When and how will I enroll in my classes?
- Freshman Undergraduate Students must complete the Academic Interest Form and take the Math Placement test. They will be enrolled in classes by Academic Advising. See "Step 5" for Admitted Freshman.
- Transfer Undergraduate Students will enroll in classes at Transfer Student Orientation.
- Graduate Students should contact their department's program director for guidance on which courses to register for after registration opens and prior to the session start date.
- You do not need to have secured your F-1 visa before enrolling in classes, but remember to unenroll yourself, if for any reason, you do not attend.
