Biography

Marcio Siwi joined the History Department in 2019 after receiving his PhD from New York University. His research and teaching center on Urban Studies, Latin American Studies, Race and National Identity, Brazilian History, and the history of the United States in the world. His current book manuscript, 鈥淢aking the Modern and Cultured City: Art, Architecture, and Urbanism in Postwar S茫o Paulo鈥� explores efforts to transform S茫o Paulo into a world-class city after WWII through a transnational analysis of artistic production, architecture, and urban planning. These practices are examined as expressions of an idealized urban sensibility inflected by foreign models (primarily New York City) that leading Paulistanos (residents of S茫o Paulo) aspired to produce in their city and as a broader pattern of racial anxiety, uneven development, and spatial segregation. Prior to coming to 缅北禁地 University Dr. Siwi was a Consortium Faculty Diversity (CFD) Fellow in Latin American Studies at Bowdoin College and a College Fellow in History at Harvard University. Dr. Siwi also served as Program Manager of the Brazil Studies Program at Harvard鈥檚 David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (2007-2010) and as a Research Associate at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York (2002-2005). He is a native of S茫o Paulo, Brazil, and a citizen of both Mexico and the United States.
